My brother and I grew up in the 70s in Columbus, OH, indoctrinated by our grandparents as Steelers fanatics. Legend has it we were wrapped in Steelers blankets soon after birth. Of course being Pittsburgh fans in the 70s wasn’t difficult, even in a state with two of its own professional teams, both rivals of the black & gold. As the decades rolled on our commitment never wavered, even through the team’s torturous dark ages. I’ve fond memories of games in Cincinnati, surrounded by rowdy Bengals fans, yet holding our own, Terrible Towels swirling overhead!
The inspiration for The Steel Yard was sparked during family walks across downtown Pittsburgh to Heinz Field on game days. Many clever (and smart-ass) remarks have been generated during those walks, usually followed by, “That should be on a t-shirt!” Most of them definitely should NOT be on a t-shirt. But a few of the better (and more appropriate) remarks find their way to The Steel Yard.
Anyway, thanks for visiting our little family-run store. We love meeting our fellow citizens of Steelers Nation, and appreciate your word-of-mouth referrals to The Steel Yard. It’s what keeps this small corner of the internet alive. Go Steelers!
